CIRCULAR 01/2010

Jeffree Trudeau was here on the southeast coast of Massachusetts for a brief visit last week. We had the opportunity to sit and talk and catch up, and we know many of you are wanting news of WBO’s Bamboo Housing Project in Haiti.

As you can imagine, there are scenarios and situations well beyond any one group or any one person’s control there on the ground in Haiti. Unfortunately, the much-needed houses just aren’t being built fast enough, despite a plethora of groups and organizations working hard to see it happen.

Ben Sandzer-Bell of CO2 Bambu met last week with SOGESOL and they are taking a “retail” approach to bamboo housing for reconstruction seriously. They still have to work out the operational kinks, and we are all feeling optimistic.

More important is the fact that CO2 Bambu’s first container, for Lutheran World Federation is on the water and en route to Haiti. It contains 2 – 20m2 homes and 18 kits for walls for transitional shelters. The market for shelters, i.e. selling just the bamboo mats, is significantly larger than that for sale of full houses, so we are all hoping this will lead to a breakthrough. If all goes well with customs clearance the first bamboo homes on Haiti will be assembled on, or close to, World Bamboo Day September 18.

Kevin Rowell of Kliewerks is also still in Haiti and working with us to promote hybrid homes of earth and bamboo,as well as bamboo plantations support.

We are also active with Shelters International in various bamboo-related projects that we will have more details on in the next report.

WBO is actively moving towards promoting a 5-year bamboo plantation program in collaboration with various groups and working with a proposal from Gib Cooper. Planting bamboos seems to be a very realistic goal at this point in time, looking at a long-term commitment for economic and environmental improvement for the people of Haiti. Once the bamboo is growing and models have been established for local community uses, we can work further on development of more bamboo housing projects, etc.

Again, we thank you for your continued support and encouragement in all things bamboo.

It is our great pleasure to invite you to participate in the inaugural International Symposium on Forestry and Forest Products (ISFFP). ISFFP 2010 is being organized in conjunction with the Forest Research Institute Malaysia’s (FRIM) 25th anniversary this year. The main objective is to discuss and disseminate the latest R&D findings that address the often competing and challenging needs of both the forestry sector and forest products industry.

Malaysia is committed to combating climate change, as reflected by the Honourable Prime Minister’s pledge at the recently concluded COP 15 under the United Nations Framework on Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) to voluntarily reduce by up to 40% of its carbon emission in terms of emission intensity based on Gross Domestic Product by 2020 from the 2005 level. The Symposium is therefore aptly themed, “Addressing global concerns and changing societal needs”.

There will be discussions on issues pertaining to;
· climate change,
· biodiversity,
· forest ecology,
· forest plantations,
· applied biotechnology in forestry,
· green technology,
· eco-tourism,
· socio-economy,
· medicinal products from plant material,
· improved processing, and
· utilisation of wood and non-wood products.

ISFFP 2010 therefore, aims to bring together all the stakeholders to reflect on these issues, in the hope of striking a balance between addressing global concerns and fulfilling societal needs for sustainable development.

Those interested in presenting a paper or poster should submit an abstract to the secretariat at isffp@frim.gov.my by 1 June 2010.

Good day to all and our gratitude goes out to all of you who have contributed either monetarily or in kind to our efforts in supporting the people of Haiti.

The work and commitment of our team over the recent months has brought the potential of bamboo to the limelight for dozens of international relief organizations, as well as individual and entrepreneurial groups of Haitians. Building transitional and permanent structures from other imported existing low cost building systems is gradually expanding amongst the various NGO’s in Haiti. WBO and INBAR have joined together in an effort to assist in bringing bamboo resources and funding for a more effective implementation of bamboo projects. We have also developed a design for transitional shelters built from bamboo and recyclable shrink-film that can be easily transformed to permanent housing as time and money become available. This design will be used for future needs also, when applicable.

Our housing partner, Ben Sandzer from CO2Bambu, visited Haiti in April in order to meet with perspective potential housing needs of UN Habitat, Red Cross and Concern. He also delivered bamboo seeds to various locations and met with CODEP to bring seeds to start planting in their established forestry nurseries. We will be sending more seeds and work with Kevin Rowell for distribution and follow up of farms where planting can occur. Kevin is also working with UN Habitat and was instrumental in putting together a document that establishes an initiative to research viability of natural local building materials best suited to rebuilding Haiti and is promoting bamboo. This can be considered a very crucial step in international bamboo support for disaster relief in Haiti and for future efforts worldwide.

Our months of work in Haiti have begun to gain valuable leverage as we continue to work with Kevin and Ben.

Excerpt from a letter written to Kleiwerks international by the Program Manager of UN-HABITAT in Haiti:

“While large amounts of funding are currently being made available for emergency shelters, very little attention is given to support research that is essential for putting together a sound and sustainable housing reconstruction strategy and to support the government in making informed decisions.”
- Jean-Christophe Adrian, Country Programme Manager UN-Habitat Haïti

Kevin will be leading the initial research work which will shift reconstruction strategies, including building materials and building guidelines to a larger focus on local materials. This document was the first officially signed letter by the Country program manager Jean-Christophe Adrian.

We are also in the planning stages of a pictorial bamboo manual for planting and production that will have some written info to be written in English and translated to Creole for local farmers and native people. WBO will be collaborating with Kevin Rowell of Kleiwerks and other local organizations to create this manual and coordinate local workshops in Haiti over the coming months. We will be submitting a proposal for additional funding in the next few weeks and anyone who would be able to contribute financially or in kind for illustrations and publishing would be acknowledged in the final presentation. We also hope to be collaborating with other authors internationally who have documented similar projects.

My sincere thanks to all of you.
~Jeffree

Sharing also in the effort of poverty eradication in the recently earthquake-hit country of Haiti, WBO and INBAR have agreed that by virtue of their respective knowledge, expertise and availability of resources in their respective fields, recognize the significance and responsibility to work towards developing and implementing collaborative programs for Haiti reconstruction activities.

WBO wishes to partner fully with all collaborators who recognize that bamboo can play a significant role in the provision of low-cost sustainable housing particularly for the poor, improve housing supply chains and disaster prevention and mitigation in the context of Sustainable Development.

WBO’s project director, Jeffree Trudeau has been very successful in establishing a prefabricated bamboo home pilot project for the people of Haiti, as well as establish a team of people in Haiti to work with permaculture specialists for a long-term bamboo plantation project. Over the past month we have raised enough money to fund the construction of 33 homes for the pilot project! This will become the testing grounds and the foundation for the establishment of a local production facility, along with ongoing support and training for propagation of bamboo for future utilization. This will ultimately support the housing reconstruction and the renewed economic growth of the Haitian people.

The proposal has short and long term issues that will be addressed and will be employed in conjunction with other NGO’s both on the ground in Haiti and from other countries with technical and financial support to carry the project for long term success. We will post a copy of the proposal on the web site soon.

We are currently negotiating long term relationships and MOU’s with key world leaders in the housing relief sector. Significant progress has been made working together with partners on logistics for land and owner contacts, as well as networking with the people on the potentials of bamboo housing alternatives. We are also creating a partnership with Kevin Rowell former co-director of Kleiwerks,http://www.kleiwerks.org . He is the founder and director for his own company, Natural Builders http://www.thenaturalbuilders.com/natural_building.html , and is volunteering his time to coordinate sustainable housing efforts in Haiti. He brings many years of experience with earth-based housing alternatives worldwide, as well as many bamboo projects with numerous companies and NGO’s. He is assisting WBO as liaison and execution body in order to insure the effective operations of WBO in Haiti.

Jeffree’s previous relationships and support for other Habitat For Humanity bamboo housing projects worldwide has created a sense of confidence in the NGO disaster relief and humanitarian aid arena. He also brings to the table years of experience in the development of disaster relief shelters and low income housing. His factory in Vietnam has built prototypes in both categories and is continuing to experiment with cutting edge idea’s being developed for Haitian relief, while providing local Vietnamese workers with alternative and fulfilling income sources. They are also given unprecedented opportunities to interface and contribute to the sustainable movement worldwide.

Jeffree’s past bamboo certification and building code approval accomplishments in the world of bamboo housing are also assisting other individuals and companies. All countries contributing and assisting Haiti’s people are interested in creating safe and affordable housing that will protect inhabitants through the hurricane season. Bamboo is becoming a more accepted shelter alternative in the wake of more potential aftershocks from the earthquake of January 12th and high winds and flooding as rainy season begins.

Once again, thanks to all of you for your support and confidence.
