  1. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I am very glad that I could participate and experience the vast knowledge on the use and importance of bamboos in different fields from the VIII World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand on 16th to 19th September, 2009. We are born with bamboos and dies with bamboos which means at the time of born our culturally bamboos are required and at the time of dead, cremation is done by bamboos for burring. We never realize how important the bamboos are. When we look back at its uses- it has many uses and meaning to the society and its culture. We have been using it in many ways – say the main earlier shutter for the Borok people of Twipra Kingdom is bamboo hut not only that we have been enjoying the taste of bamboo shoot say the main curry of our Borok people in that particular bamboo shoot season. Likewise, as we enjoy the bamboos most of the North-Eastern India people also enjoy it say from birth to death which include for making shelter, foods, Weapons, etc.

The main object of the book “Ua Yarwang” means bamboo roots is to bring awareness the knowledge the day to days uses of bamboos through bamboo craft, commercial plantation in large quantizes, scientific management, village level management and preservation and the comparison of processing of bamboos the past and the present, In a very special way, I would like to focus the bamboo sector area of Twipra kingdom so that the people living in that particular area get the benefit of it through value addition as it was not done by the State of Twipra. The main bamboo recourses lie within the Borok People area but when we look at them they are deprived with their resources. The main people enjoying the resources are high Borok. So, from this point of view it is very sad to note that say any State power did not help much for the welfare of the Borok people especially in commercial site instead they bribe the resources. So, it will be wise that the Borok people get the facilities of the fund send by the Central Government (Likely- National Mission on Bamboo Applications, National Bamboo Mission) in practically not only by paper work.

I would like to thank for the messages and acknowledge received from Mr. Tangwan, IFS, PCCF, Tripura and Mission Director, National Bamboo Mission, Tripura; Dr. B.K. Dutta, Tripura University and my colleagues and many other unknown faces that supported me for editing the book.

  2. Crafts LIVING IN TWIPRA, INDIA

Twipra is one of the small states & has rich heritage of Crafts & Culture especially in the field of handicrafts. The Crafts of Twipra are enriched by a confluence of country traditions which provide a wide variety of hand made artifacts & cultures that are both vibrant & adapted innovations & craftsmen of rich folk cultures to merge with its own traditions, giving skilled craftsmen opportunity to prosper themselves. The hand woven & handcrafted master pieces from the artisans of Twipra emotions. From every corner of the state comes an exquisite craft which range from intricate bamboo & cane crafts of “Rangamti”(Udaipur) & many more crafts scattered all over Twipra. The skilled craftsmanship combined with famous Jamatia Master craftsmanship qualities has led to wide spread acceptance of Twipra crafts not only in the country but all over world. Jamatia culture has been described as the bamboo based culture thus Twipra being part of this culture also knows accordingly. For Mongalaid people, the Jamatia Community has to eat bamboo, sleep with bamboo, live with bamboo & drink with bamboo. While making crafts to bamboo. From times immemorial down to the present day, bamboos have been an integral part of the lives of people in Twipra & North-Eastern region (India).

As the literary sources are scanty & unhelpful, the study of the material culture of the people offers a method to understand the history of the use of bamboo .Here again; a problem arises in the collection of bamboo products. “Twiching” basket for example, can be stored upon kingdom. i.e. scaffolds suspended over the place Amarpur (Amarmanikya king), South, Twipra. For some time & then preserved to last more than two-four generations. But people generally make & use only those things that that are need in their every day life. Bamboo articles are not thus easily available. The usual practice is to mend again & again even baskets that had passed through the generations Such Twiching, basket still in use, provide the answers to several queries, such as reasons for different makes, the methods of make the varied uses, the changes that had taken place. At present the Jamatia generally use “Twiching” basket which is flat bottomed & they are carried on the head. Such a historical evolution of the “Twiching” basket to suit the changing environs can be understood from Physical examination of available “Twiching” basket at different places of the Twipra .Any other method used to trace the origin of types of “Changpai” & other basket is their nomenclature. The hill tribes lived in constant fear of threat to life. This inherent feeling of insecurity is reflected in the various bamboo crafts of the Twipra people. The Twipra kings on their subject & even some of the legal terms used by the Jamatia shows the society was only a larger tribal society. Just as in case of design of “Twiching” basket which under went changes through various evolutions, the society also was subject to changeless in accordance to change of environment.

The Jamatia community basket used name “TWICHING”. This basket is used by the Jamatia tribes of Twipra for carring firewood & traditional marriage time water carring.Twipra kingdom time to human civilization crafts madden by “Twiching”.
    Jamatia Crafts Culture

The Construction Principal is similar to that of ‘paikawng’ basket & the structure of the self-strengthened rim is identical. The sides, in an open-hexagonal weave, have their in clines elements tilting away from the vertical at greater angle. Hence, the hexagons formed are shorter & more rows are needed to build up the required height, shorter hexagons are appropriate here as the thickness of individual elements is mush less. An interesting detail in this ‘ Twiching’ basket is the manner in which loose ends of horizontal elements (those spiraling around the square base) are twisted info a fibrous rope before being tacked back, to lock into the weave.
