Call for Papers to Showcase Brazil’s Bamboo Potential at COP30

March 21, 2025

Exploring Bamboo’s Role in Sustainability, Climate Action, and Economic Growth in Brazil

CALL FOR PAPERS

The World Bamboo Organization, in collaboration with the Brazilian Bamboo Network, is now accepting papers for consideration for electronic publication leading up to COP30 in Belem, Brazil from 10-21 November.

The purpose of this publication is to highlight the tremendous potential of bamboo in the largest nation in South America. The WBO recognizes the importance of bamboo in Brazil, as the country with the greatest bamboo diversity and the highest percentage of endemic woody bamboos in Latin America; there are 232 native species of bamboo in Brazil.  Globally, bamboo forests are increasingly acknowledged for their ecological significance and potential in carbon sequestration. As a fast-growing plant, bamboo can play a crucial role in mitigating climate change by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and storing it in biomass and soil, as well as durable goods.  With this local resource, proper management of bamboo forests and plantations can provide sustainable building materials, fiber, biofuel and more, providing rural communities with economic potentials, restoring degraded lands, and mitigating climate change in the most simple and complex ways. Brazil has the potential to benefit nationally in what is now at least a $60billionUSD

/annual market and be the industry leader in Latin America.

Theme: Bamboo for Progress

It is our desire to showcase the recent progress of bamboo development within Brazil and exemplify these potentials through the global event known as the World Bamboo Congress (WBC). Submitted papers will be reviewed by a joint WBO/RBB Technical Committee and the selected papers will be published electronically just prior to the opening of COP30. Selected papers will also be considered for oral presentation at the 13th World Bamboo Congress 2026 in Brazil <date to be determined>.
