A Landmark Survey Unveiling the Future of Sustainable Bamboo Management
The World Bamboo Organization (WBO) and the World Bamboo Foundation (WBF) proudly announce the release of the 2024 Global Bamboo Plantation Resource Survey Results Report, a comprehensive study addressing critical knowledge gaps in the global bamboo sector.
This survey, conducted between May 15 and July 15, 2024, involved 393 respondents across 68 countries, collectively reporting 2,366,587.59 hectares of bamboo plantations. The findings emphasize bamboo's vital role in sustainable economic, social, and environmental development.
Key Findings
Global Plantation Data:
Of the total 2,366,587.59 hectares reported:
2,164,379.91 hectares are naturally occurring, managed by 64 holders.
202,207.68 hectares are intentionally planted, managed by 329 holders.
Geographic Distribution:
Asia leads with 63.5% of the total, comprising 1,375,169 hectares.
Americas account for 34.8%, totaling 754,722 hectares.
Africa represents 10.7%, equivalent to 232,885 hectares.
Europe contributes just 0.2% (3,773 hectares).
Oceania reports a negligible 0.001% (40 hectares).
Methodology and OutreachThe survey team implemented a multilingual and multi-platform strategy to ensure inclusivity:
Digital Reach: Over 6,951 individuals engaged through social media, with 6,000+ newsletters sent.
Survey Accessibility: Surveys in English and Spanish garnered 368 completions (208 in English, 160 in Spanish).
Collaborations: Key virtual events with organizations like Bambucultura: Red Latina, The Bam Lab (UBC), and Mesa Técnica from Peru bolstered participation.
This report is a significant step in bridging data gaps in global bamboo resource management.
