Globally, China has the greatest abundance of bamboo resources. With an estimated 6.5 million hectares of bamboo forests (as of 2018) comprising 40 genera and 800 species, China boasts the world’s largest bamboo forest area and bamboo diversity. It is also the leading producer of bamboo products. Bamboo has some 10,000 documented applications, and can be used as a material in construction, interior design, furniture, paper, packaging, medicine, food, textiles and chemicals. According to estimates made by the China Bamboo Industry Association, the total output value of China’s bamboo industry in 2018 was USD 39.6 billion (RMB 280 billion).
