What is the World Bamboo Congress?

1984 - 1st WBC
The first meeting that brought together the American Bamboo Society and European Bamboo Societies for international exchange, titled the International Bamboo Conference. This event is now referred to as the first World Bamboo Congress.
1988 - 2nd WBC
The second meeting of ABS and EBS groups in France, hosted by La Bambousearie de Prafrance in Anduze.
1991 - International Bamboo Workshop
Chiangmai, Thailand. Supported by the International Development Research Centre, the vision of a global bamboo coalition was born here.
1992 - 3th WBC
Minamata, Japan. Hosted by the Japanese government, this event saw the formal establishment of the International Bamboo Association (IBA), which later evolved into the World Bamboo Organization (WBO).
1995 - 4th WBC
Bali, Indonesia. A pioneering event that brought together various international organizations such as INBAR and IPGRI.
1998 - 5th WBC
San Jose, Costa Rica. Co-organized by IBA and INBAR.
2004 - 6th WBC
Delhi, India. Organized with support from the Indian government and INBAR.
2007 - 7th WBC
Rio de Janeiro, Brasil. Canceled.
2009 - 8th WBC
Bangkok, Thailand. Theme: Bamboo, the Environment, and Climate Change.
2012 - 9th WBC
Antwerp, Belgium. Sponsored by the University of Antwerp and local municipalities.
2015 - 10th WBC
Damyang, South Korea. Theme: Bamboo for a Greener Future.
2018 - 11th WBC
Xalapa, Mexico. Theme: Sustainability, Environment, Society, and Economy.
2024 - 12th WBC
Hsinchu and Caotun, Taiwan. Theme: Next Generation Bamboo: Solution, Innovation, and Design.
