Our beloved mentor, teacher, scholar, gentleman, and friend, Dr. Walter Liese, has passed away.

To many of us, he was like a father or a grandfather, helping and critiquing us as we searched for knowledge in understanding bamboo. Fortunately he lived a very long life to the age of 97, working until the end, to understand all he could about bamboo, too. He was forever curious, and enjoyed learning what everyone around him was doing, writing, and thinking.

In 2009 he was honored by the World Bamboo Organization as one of our first World Bamboo Pioneers. He was proud of that, as he was to give the first UEDA lecture at the 8th World Bamboo Congress in Bangkok.

Here is a wonderful eulogy written by his friend Dr. Wulf Killman, that was published by IUFRO, of which WBO is a member.
