WBD 2019 CALL
To all the bamboo lovers and crusaders,
On September 18, 2019 we will celebrate the tenth anniversary of World Bamboo Day all over the world.
This celebration was initiated by Mr. Kamesh Salam, former president of World Bamboo Organization, during the 8th World Bamboo Congress held in Bangkok (Thaïland) in 2009.
Since then, this day is a world-wide event gathering hundreds of thousands of people to manifest the importance of bamboo as a plant companion for humanity.
From childrens' school to village communities, from university to organized society, from rural areas to urban places, on September 18, bamboo is on stage. Music, dance, food sharing, talk and conferences, exhibits and building constructions, every human gesture on this particular day is a symbol of acknowledgement to the multipurpose services offered to humans by a very humble plant : bamboo.
And this coming September 18 will be more important than ever. Not only as a ten years anniversary celebration but also because we are more and more becoming aware of the important role of bamboo to confront the challenge of climate warming, particularly with a lot of people exposed to the destructive effects of this threat (drought, super typhoons, floods, landslides...).
Bamboo as a fast growing plant, with its amazing capacity of sequestering CO2, of producing a huge amount of biomass, with its ability to restore degraded lands and to stabilize soils against erosion and plague, with its talent to produce renewable material (shoots and poles)... bamboo in our present time is becoming a masterful social and economic plant.
That is why, everywhere on the planet, people are gathering on September 18 to celebrate bamboo as a «hero».
In 2015, during the 10th World Bamboo Congress in Damyang (Korea), the WBO decided to launch a call «Bamboo for Planet» to invite the United Nations to recognize September 18 as World Bamboo Day with a worldwide impact. Negotiations are still in progress.
Today, taking the opportunity of this 10th anniversary, WB0 invites all the bamboo lovers all over the planet to celebrate with force and pride of September 18, 2019.
