World Bamboo Foundation Global Fellowship Opportunity

Application Deadline: 15 January 2021

Award Amount: from $5,000 - $20,000. usd

Background: In conjunction with a private foundation, the World Bamboo Organization has established the World Bamboo Foundation (WBF) <December 2020>. The leadership of the WBO and the private foundation share the objective to recognize timber bamboo silviculture and commercialization alongside that of traditional wood. Thus, the purpose of the WBF is to financially support and advance the use of sustainably grown and harvested timber bamboo as a major contributor for both global climate change and poverty mitigation.

We are pleased to introduce the WBF Global Fellowship program, which will be awarded with a stipend for topics relevant to the investigation of timber bamboo and its potential contribution to mitigating global warming.

Immediate Position Opening: WBF Global Fellow

Term: January 2021 to January 2022

Education Requirements: Undergraduate or graduate degree in botany, forestry, agroforestry, silviculture, ecology, plant physiology, materials science, architecture, engineering or other field of study that can support a year-long investigation of timber bamboo and its potential contribution to mitigating global warming.

Prior Work or Academic Experience: Prior work or academic experience will be considered beneficial, but not absolutely necessary.

Location and Travel: The Fellow will work remotely at a location of their choice. No per diem or living expenses will be provided. Travel and accommodation expenses to attend the 12th World Bamboo Congress in Taiwan will be provided, plus any other locations deemed appropriate by the WBF. In the event other travel demands occur, the Board will review and approve if reimbursable. Residence, prior residence or work experience in tropical and subtropical bamboo growing areas will be a positive consideration, though not a requirement.

General Work Requirements: The overall work of the Fellow will be conducted independently, with multiple reporting requirements. The Fellow will bear dual responsibilities to (a) complete a broad research summary that supports the Foundation’s climate change and poverty mitigation objectives and (b) provide initial administrative support to the Board and the two Prize Committees, especially as regards to public communication and outreach needs.

Specific Work Requirements: In addition to the General Work Requirements, the Fellow will make two presentations at the 12thWBC Taiwan. One will address sources and uses of published research that indicates bamboo’s potential role in the dual mitigation of climate change and poverty. The other will identify a set of needs and opportunities that the world bamboo community can engage to accelerate the commercialization of timber bamboo that can accelerate the dual mitigation objectives.

Language Requirement: The work will be completed in English. The Fellow must be functionally fluent in both spoken and written English, though native English speaking is not a requirement.

Personal Attributes: Because the Fellow will work independently, a mature, self-starting and well-organized work nature will be necessary.

Annual Stipend: An annual stipend, paid monthly, will be set ranging from $5,000 to $20,000, depending on experience, qualifications, and living requirements.

Application Process: Effective January 5, candidates may submit a written statement of interest. The WBF may select from the statement of interest or follow with a formal application process, at the sole discretion of the WBF.

At the bottom of the form, simply hit SUBMIT and the form will be delivered directly to the World Bamboo Foundation.

The initial Statement of Interest deadline is January 15.
