News & Events:Significant Results with the Government of Manipur, WBW 2019

“Bamboo Capital of 2019”

During the inauguration ceremony of The Third World Bamboo Workshop on 4 February attended by Chief Minister N. Biren Singh, World Bamboo Organization President Michel Abadie declared the state of Manipur as “Bamboo Capital of 2019”.

Participants from over 30 countries were present with approximately 700 people in attendance, consisting of policy makers, corporate business representatives, researchers, architects, designers, farmers, artisans, foresters, growers, and students. Dr. Nirmala Chongtham, originally of Imphal, served as National Coordinator of the WBW.

The declaration is an effort to call attention to the vast bamboo resources of Manipur, which totals almost 70% of the total amount of India’s bamboo stock. The theme of the 3rd World Bamboo Workshop is “Breaking the Challenges of Bamboo for a Better Future”, with presentations by experts from around the world and the opportunity for hands-on building experience, all aimed at stimulating interest and investment in the bamboo sector of Manipur and beyond.

The last declaration of “Bamboo Capital” by President Michel Abadie was in September 2015, in Damyang, South Korea, during the 10th World Bamboo Congress.

“Bamboo for Planet”

The Damyang Call – Imphal Reiteration

We, people of bamboo, invite all government leaders from all countries of our planet to recognize the essential contribution of bamboo in the
fight against climate change.

We testify that bamboo is one of the best CO2 sequestrating agro-forestry plants, which is able to restore and protect lands from erosion and degradation, that bamboo can produce high quality woody fiber material from a quickly renewable resource, and that bamboo can be sustainably managed to provide economic revenue for human populations in need.

We urge governments to free bamboo, a giant grass, from the restrictions of outdated national forestry codes
to stimulate social and economic developments.

We urge governments to launch innovative policies to stimulate the multi-use of bamboo potentiality on energy, building, medicine, transportation,
agroforestry, nutrition,
and other modern innovative capacities.

We plead for governments to support research,
exchange knowledge and improve communication
on bamboo development
for the sake of all humanity.

On the occasion of the Third World Bamboo Workshop
4-8 February, 2019 Imphal, Manipur

Nongthombam Biren Singh
Chief Minister of Manipur
