Champions of Change: Empowering Bamboo for a better Future
Dedicated volunteers steer the World Bamboo Organization. The Ambassadors work independently but are connected as a team, and we collaborate to expand the potential of our actions and our mission.
Jaime Espinosa
Spain
Architecture and Urban Planning
Jaime Espinosa, born and raised in Madrid (the capital city of Spain) became interested in bamboo back in 2004 when he was still an undergraduate student at the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid - UPM. Before gaining his first Master's degree in Architecture (MArch, 2011) from the UPM, he had been granted a scholarship to conduct a technology transfer project between Colombia and Tanzania focused on the sustainable use of bamboo. Fundación Caja Madrid funded Jaime to obtain his second master's degree, in Architecture and Sustainable Urban Design (MSc, 2014), from Lund University, in Sweden.
In the present, Jaime directs his own architecture studio while being a PhD candidate at UPM's Department of Construction and Architectural Technologies. He is the founding and still current Secretary of AsIB – Iberian Bamboo Association and represents it at UNE – Asociación Española de Normalización (the Spanish office for standardization), where he has translateD the ISO standards related to structural bamboo culms. Among his clients, private and public agents as well as third sector, are found Greenpeace and the Red Cross. He is proudly a World Bamboo Ambassador since 2017. Up to date, he has had the opportunity to materialize structural bamboo related projects in Tanzania, Mexico, Spain, Vietnam, Colombia and Madagascar.
